The Motivating Movement Through Marathoning Challenge

Eighty-three students and teachers from seven Cleveland Schools are participating in a program designed to increase health and self-confidence. The eleven week Motivating Movement Through Marathoning Challenge is a joint program between Cleveland Schools and the Cleveland YMCA. The Motivating Movement Through Marathoning Challenge was created out of the Cleveland Department of Public Health's nationally-funded Steps to a Healthier Cleveland program and promotes exercising particularly running and walking for in youth and continued throughout life. This program is a response to the troubling national statistics about health and obesity in the nation's schools. The students participating in the Motivating Movement Through Marathoning Challenge engaged in a series of conditioning exercises and running and walking a cumulative 26.2 miles which is equal in distance to the annual Cleveland/Rite Aid Marathon. One group of students from Denison School has formed an all girl-team. Other Cleveland Schools involved in the Motivating Movement Through Marathoning Challenge are Sunbeam School, Emile B. deSauze School, Orchard School, Buckeye-Woodland School, Tremont School and Willow School. Each student received help and assistants from YMCA mentors and trainers which included a free four-month membership to the YMCA branch in their area. All the participants engaged in exercises that equaled 2.5 miles per week. A special celebration was held at the 10-mile mark in preparation for last month's 29th annual Rite Aid Marathon and 10K events, which attracted nearly 8,000 runners. The students from Cleveland Schools participating in the Motivating Movement Through Marathoning Challenge received several surprises which included a pre-race pep talk given by four-time Boston Marathon winner Bill Rodgers, a pair of Asic's running shoes donated by the Second Sole in Mayfield Heights, T-shirts and an official Rite Aid Marathon medal.

Several teachers and staff members at the Daniel E. Morgan School, a member of the Cleveland Schools, have been given the prestigious Governor's Gold Award. They received this award as part of the Healthy Ohioans physical education initiative. The Daniel E. Morgan School has received particularly high scores in the areas of promoting healthy choices, physical education practices, nutrition education, and tobacco education. Teachers and other representatives from the Daniel E. Morgan School will receive the Governor's Gold Award at an award ceremony and luncheon honoring the school in August.

Teachers Make Pact to Fight Being Overweight

A group of dedicated teachers at Cleveland School's Emile B. deSauze School have decided to work towards losing weight. Over an eight-week period seventeen teachers challenged each other to a weight loss competition. As a motivation, each teacher contributed to a weekly pot. The teachers were judged and led by the school's physical education teacher. Under the PE teachers guidance the group lost a combined one hundred eleven pounds. As an honor to their dedication and competition the American Heart Association treated the teacher's group to a healthy breakfast and gave each teacher a "Go Red for Women" wrist bands.

Are you intrigued or surprised by the way I titled this article? It probably seems like writing obituaries would be filled with anything other than joy. I agree, or at least I would have agreed up until a few months ago when I had the privilege of helping two friends write the obituaries for their grandmothers.

I used to think that writing obituaries would be a thing of dread, filled with nothing but morbid thoughts of how a loved one would no longer be around to share life with you. I was sure that writing obituaries was never a healthy, healing thing for a person to do. My two friends changed my views of all of this. I sat with my two friends at our favorite coffee shop as they determined to write appropriate obituaries for their grandmothers who had ironically died within a week of each other. I ordered everyone lattes and joined my friends with a bit of reservation about what the next hours would hold. I think I was there for moral support, to grab a Kleenex if I saw a tear or to order another drink if more caffeine was needed. I sat quietly and watched as they began to write the obituaries that many people would read to grieve and remember the women who had passed on.

Minutes passed quickly until we had been in the coffee shop for three hours. I was nearly in shock over all I had observed and learned during that time. Rather than being filled with an endless stream of tears, our hours were filled with tons of laughter. My two friends were looking at the task of writing the obituaries with joy and gratefulness. They were glad to have been the ones in their families chosen for the task and they threw themselves in to the work fully.For both of them, writing obituaries for their grandmothers was a privilege. They enjoyed the opportunity to wander back through years of memories and special moments shared with their grandmas. Their grieving was overshadowed only by the joy of remembering. This was a lesson that I needed to learn. I never thought about writing obituaries as an opportunity to honor a loved one and find joy, peace and healing in the process, but that is exactly what my two friends did that afternoon.

So now, as I sit down to write obituaries for my own loved ones who have passed, I do it with joy. I do it to remember the best parts of who they were and the many ways that they influenced my life for the better. It may sound a little silly, but writing obituaries isn't something I mind doing at all.

Most people these days are in a position to comfortably pay for the necessities of life. Bills like rent and electricity as well as food and clothing expenses, while not cheap, are at least affordable for most people who are in employment. What causes most people the financial hardships that they experience is the discretionary expenditures that they make. This is the money spend on things that they do not really need, and sometimes do not even want, but are enticed into buying while shopping.

One of the best ways to avoid succumbing to unnecessary purchases is preparation. What this comes down to in practice is making a shopping list. Then when you are in the store, stick to the list. Obviously you will not be able to know exactly how much everything will cost but at the very least you can limit yourself to only buying the items on your list.

You can even consider taking out the cash you are prepared to spend before hand and then leaving your credit and store cards at home. Whatever your limit, keeping to it, and deciding before hand what you want to buy and what you want to spend is the secret to keeping your spending under control.

As a professional business person, how do you want to be perceived? Even something as seemingly insignificant as spelling can determine whether others believe you're competent or sloppy. Take a moment, and think about that.

Ask yourself, "Are my customers likely to want my services if I can't be bothered with the details of spelling a word correctly?" The answer is no.

Okay, so your customers may not go running down the street to find someone else at the first sign of a misspelled word. However, misspellings and typos certainly don't add to your credibility. Recognize that spelling counts.

Computer Spell Check Function
Since the advent of the spell check function on the computer, many people believe (incorrectly) that spelling skills are no longer necessary. Don't misunderstand. There's nothing wrong with using the spell checker. In fact, it's a great device, and should be utilized all the time.

However, the intended use for this tool is for reference, not as your only source for catching errors. There's only one acceptable tool for that-your brain. (Phooey! You were hoping I had a magic wand to wave over the email screen!)

Verify Versus Correct
Why do you need to know how to spell? Because you can use the wrong word for the occasion and still manage to spell that wrong word correctly. When this happens, the spell checker won't recognize your error. The checker only verifies that words are spelled correctly. It doesn't verify that you have used the proper word.

"Little" words in particular are notorious for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You should pay special attention to these potential hazards when typing.

Here are a few examples of pairs that are often mistaken for each other (and, hence, often missed when proofreading): "for" and "from"; "it," "is," and "if"; "you" and "your." Because your eyes sweep over them, these little words are easy to miss.

New Words
The spell checker also won't correct new words. And, computers and technology have created a whole set of new words. You will need to know how to spell them when your spell checker spits them out.

A perfect example is the spelling of the hi-tech word "email." In addition to that spelling, there are at least two other versions: "e-mail" and "e mail." For this article, I chose "email" as the preferred spelling. Why?

There are three reasons. One, the word "email" is faster to type since there's no hyphen and no space. Two, there are fewer opportunities to make typos if you aren't typing a hyphen. Three, the word "email" simply appears neater and clearer.

In addition to amusement, the purpose of sharing this poem is to remind you to proofread carefully. You can't leave a positive impression on customers and colleagues with sloppy email messages.

The psychologist, Carl Jung, described hidden part of our psyche as "the shadow". It's the part that sometimes frightens us with the things we don't know, or don't want to know about ourselves.

It is essentially our unconscious mind telling us what it wants. Sometimes it comes in dreams, other times and a welling up of emotion.

I Just had some thoughts about this so-called "dark" side and how it applies to learning mind control.

Some people are so oppressed that showing any interest in this shadow side creates fear if for no better reason than it's what you were told not to do.

We all are likely to remember the voice of Darth Vader saying "Come to the Dark Side, Luke!"

That shadow side exists and many, many, MANY people will tell you to destroy it. To destroy your passions, wants, needs and desires. They will plead with us to connect with something higher that we can only dream and guess about.

They offer us something greater without really being clear on what it is.

Their hope is that if we give up everything that makes us animals we will become more Human, or perhaps we might even become Divine.

We can dream.

But do we dream at the cost of denying what we want right here and now?

In a society (family/relationship) that endevours to control and oppress in one way or another sometimes the "shadow" side of us is the most healthy and doing the forbidden, i.e., loving your shadow is the best thing that you can do for yourself.

They present it like an either/or proposition. Should it be?

By embracing the fact that we are animals (prove to me you don't have a genetic make up and I'll believe otherwise) and still reaching upwards perhaps we can come to a middle and sensible ground.

See the game of life and politics, i.e. mind control, as part of the Big Picture and one can walk Wide Awake with feet firmly planted on the ground and still reaching upwards.

It's the best of both worlds.

Why would you want less?

One out of every eight people call themselves a writer, which means there are roughly 24 million people in the United States who carry that banner. Unfortunately there are charlatans and scam artists just waiting to ambush the unsuspecting author. How can a novice writer protect themselves?

Anyone can call themselves a publisher. Always remember money flows towards the author from the publisher, not the other way round.

What to look out for:

Charges the author a fee up front, to have their book accepted, considered or read. These fees are sometimes called a reading fee, intake fee or administrative fee.

Directs authors toward specific editing services or gives authors' names to these services, with the caveat that if the author hires the editing service, their book will be published. Every book needs editing. It is part of the publisher's job to provide that editing at no cost.

Offers a contract where the author has to pay for part of the publishing costs. The acquisition editor will sometimes say that the publisher's list is full for that season, but the author's book has so much going for it, they would still like to publish it. However the publisher's resources are fully committed and the author will have to share in the costs.

Some publishers offer contracts that are unfair, such as they obtain rights that should remain with the author of the work.

Some publishers' contracts contain a clause that if the author says anything negative about the publisher, there is a monetary fine. There are also publishers who hold the rights for a lengthy time period, regardless of whether the book is still in print or selling.

The publisher doesn't disclose they are a Publish on Demand (POD), or vanity/subsidy publisher. There is nothing wrong with an author using a subsidy/vanity publishing company as long as the author is well aware of the disadvantages. Publish on Demand books are not, as a rule, stocked by bookstores.

Some POD publishers will insist that their books are available in book stores, as a way to get around this issue. Available is not the same thing as stocked. Available only means the book can be ordered through the bookstore. Since the majority of books sold, are stocked and sold by bookstores, this situation puts a damper on sales.

What else can a writer do to check if a publisher is legitimate?

Go to the local bookstore and see if any of the publisher's titles are stocked. Ask the manager if necessary.

Search the Internet using the publisher's name plus the word 'scam' or 'complaint.'

A publisher's website is targeted to its customers. If the website promotes the books they've published that's a good sign.

If the website is focused on recruiting writers, that's a bad sign.

Go to forums or bulletin boards that are for writers and see what the authors who have published with the publisher you're considering have to say about their experience.

If you have joined one of the plethora of online affiliate programs in the hope of earning a fortune and the dollars aren't quite rolling in yet, you may be considering it a waste of time. However before losing all faith in the system, there are a number of ways in which you can turn your site into a moneymaking forum once again.

Ezines are electronic publications distributed by email or posted on a website. Ezines are typically focused on a certain subject matter. Ezines are just like your typical magazine format of monthly or weekly topical publications in an electronic format.

The title EZINE does not come from the phrase Electronic Magazine, cause you might be thinking that the E in electronic and the Zine in magazine are joined to form this word.

Actually Ezine came from the word FanZine which was a publication with a small subscriber base back then. FanZines were targeted publications that were usually geared towards specific topics like Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Football clubs.

Those printed publications were called 'FanZines', but were frequently referred to as 'Zines' instead.

The DSM-IV-TR (2000) defines a personality disorder as:
"An enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations the individuals culture (and is manifested in two or more of his or her areas of mental life:) cognition, affectivity, interpersonal functioning, or impulse control."

Such a pattern is rigid, long-term (stable), and recurrent. It manifests itself in all areas of life (it is pervasive). It is not owing to substance-abuse or a medical condition (such as head trauma). It renders the subject dysfunctional "in social , occupational, or other important areas" and this impairment causes distress.

In the DSM, there are 10 distinct personality disorders (Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal, Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic, Avoidant, Dependent, Obsessive-compulsive) and one catchall category, Personality Disorders NOS (Not Otherwise Specified).

Personality disorders with marked similarities are grouped into clusters.

Cluster A (the Odd or Eccentric Cluster) includes the Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders.

Cluster B (the Dramatic, Emotional, or Erratic Cluster) is comprised of the Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, and Narcissistic Personality Disorders.


Cluster C (the Anxious or Fearful Cluster) encompasses the Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-compulsive Personality Disorders.

The Clusters are not valid theoretical constructs and have never been verified or rigorously tested. They constitute merely a convenient shorthand and so provide little additional insight into their component personality disorders.

We start our tour with Cluster B because the personality disorders it includes are ubiquitous. You are far more likely to have come across a Borderline or a Narcissist or a Psychopath than across a Schizotypal, for instance. First, an overview of Cluster B:

Borderline Personality Disorder is marked by instability. The patient is a roller-coaster of emotions (this is called emotional lability). She (most Borderlines are women) fails to maintain stable relationships and dramatically attaches to, clings, and violently detaches from a seemingly inexhaustible stream of lovers, spouses, intimate partners, and friends. Self-image is volatile, one's sense of self-worth is fluctuating and precarious, affect is unpredictable and inappropriate, and impulse control is impaired (the patient's threshold of frustration is low).

The Antisocial Personality Disorder involves contemptuous disregard for others. The psychopath ignores or actively violates other people's rights, choices, wishes, preferences, and emotions.

The Narcissistic Personality Disorder is founded on a sense of fantastic grandiosity, brilliance, perfection, and power (omnipotence). The narcissist lacks empathy, is exploitative, and compulsively seeks narcissistic supply (attention, admiration, adulation, being feared, etc.) to buttress his False Self - a confabulated "person" aimed at inspiring awe and extracting compliance and subservience from others.

Finally, the Histrionic Personality Disorder also revolves around attention-seeking but is usually confined to sexual conquests and displays of the histrionic's capacity to irresistibly seduce others.

Tracie's Story: Book Review

Tracie's Story, by Marguerite Ashton, had sucked me into the story right from the start, and I had difficulty tearing myself away from the book all the way to the end. This is very a moving tale that is based on a true story of a woman brought up by an alcoholic single mother.

As a child, Tracie bravely accepts the barrage of difficulties, disrespect and responsibilities of handling a helplessly drunken parent – but it leaves her emotionally scarred. While driving under the influence, the thoughtless mother inflicts a permanent and visible disability on her child that serves as a constant reminder of her past. Every mirror, every pair of eyes reflects her abnormality and this becomes a torment for Tracie. As an adult, she struggles with her inner demons and the mind-numbing addictions to both alcohol and her work.

Marguerite Ashton uses a direct and simple writing style that envelops the reader in Tracie's world so deeply that the real world fades away for a little while. The ending left me with a feeling that the book is not finished. Yet, because I was thinking about it for days, I would have to say the ending was quite effective.
